Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL) will make its e-commerce debut around Diwali, sources told Business Standard. The time is apt considering almost 30% of the annual sales are clocked during this festive season in October month.
While Flipkart and Amazon have been competing fiercely through their Big Billion Day and Great Indian Diwali Sale respectively, the Ambani venture will make the fight tougher, analysts told Business Standard.
What worries major players is that RIL is planning to converge telecom, media and commerce. Last month, Mukesh Ambani had said at the Vibrant Gujarat Global summit that Reliance Jio and Reliance Retail would launch a unique e-commerce platform “to empower and enrich our 1.2 million small retailer and shopkeepers in Gujarat.”
The company is currently doing pilot tests in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore to set up the infrastructure for a full-fledged horizontal e-commerce offering.
