After doing away with eBay.in, Flipkart launches ‘2GUD’ for refurbished goods

Walmart-owned e-commerce behemoth Flipkart has launched ‘2GUD’, a new platform to sell refurbished products. Currently, 2GUD is available only as a mobile site.

This development comes a month after Flipkart announced to shut down the operations of eBay.in which it had acquired in June last year. It had said it will launch its own platform for used products. In May this year, eBay announced to sell its holdings in Flipkart, “which will represent gross proceeds of approximately USD1.1 billion.”

In a statement, Flipkart said 2GUD will list only certified products that will have a post-purchase warranty of 3-12 months for every product that is sold on its platform. It will also offer product service through a network of 140 service centres across India.

2GUD will sell used as well as unboxed products, which it claims will be restored to full functionality by professionals.

In terms of competition, Flipkart’s biggest rival in India—Amazon—also sells certified and refurbished electronic products on its marketplace. Besides that, e-commerce platforms such as ShopClues, Junglee, and Snapdeal have dedicated refurbished categories on their platforms.

Olx and Quikr that allow users to list and sell their old products directly to buyers also pose a competition to Flipkart’s newly launched platform. On this, Flipkart said that while other existing players in this segment usually connect the sellers to customers, Flipkart’s 2GUD will sell the products directly to users.

“Although a few players cater primarily to the customer-to-customer segment, the refurbished goods market in India is still largely unorganized. Additionally, users will always be assured of convenience in payments and logistics. Further, while existing refurbished sellers take the classifieds route, which insists on interactions between buyer and seller, 2GUD removes the hassle of buyer-seller interaction,” Flipkart said.

To start with, 2GUD’s product portfolio includes smartphones, laptops, tablets and electronic accessories According to the website more than 400 categories will be added soon.
