Facebook Inc. has announced the appointment of Star India-owned online video platform Hotstar's CEO Ajit Mohan as managing director and vice-president of Facebook India. He is expected to join early next year.

Mohan will lead a senior leadership team at Facebook India which will look at strengthening the social media firm’s relations with people, businesses and the government. Mohan will take up the position which had been vacant from the last 15 months after Umang Bedi resigned from Facebook India. It was Facebook South Asia director Sandeep Bhushan who was acting as its interim managing director. Mohan, who has 20 years of experience has worked with McKinsey and Co. as well as management consulting firm Arthur D. Little besides his stint with Star India.

With the general elections in India slated for next year, the government is tightening its noose around social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp for spreading misinformation. On Monday, the Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp also announced the appointment of Komal Lahiri as its India grievance officer. Facebook has drawn much flak in the country recently over data leak and spread of fake news.
