Toutiao launches social commerce app

Jinri Toutiao, a news aggregation platform owned by Chinese ByteDance, has reportedly launched a life-styled focused social commerce mobile app to challenge Xiaohongshu platform valued at USD 3 billion.

The quiet launch of the new mobile app "Xincao" in October marks the ambition of ByteDance, one of the top unicorns in China with a value around USD 75 billion, to march into Chinese social commerce market.

Its services, very similar to those of Xiaohongshu, allows users to share photos and videos, write posts and tag items in their pictures that link to e-commerce listings. The company is yet to open its in-app purchasing service as Xincao is still in the incubation phase.
