Baidu, Volvo join hands for driverless passenger cars

Chinese internet giant Baidu, Inc. has formed a strategic partnership on Thursday with Volvo Cars, the world’s biggest passenger vehicle market, to jointly develop and mass produce Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving passenger cars for the Chinese market, according to a statement released by Baidu.

Under the collaboration, Baidu will empower Volvo with the capabilities of Apollo, Baidu’s autonomous driving platform, while Volvo will provide access to its expertise and advanced technologies of the automotive industry.

The agreement marks a starting point for the two companies to explore commercialisation opportunities in China’s autonomous driving passenger car market in the coming years. The partnership is Volvo´s first in China to jointly develop autonomous vehicles.
