Tencent to expand underage ID check to all games

Tencent Holdings will roll out an addiction-prevention system through real-name verification for underage gamers to all of its games by next year, the company said on November 5, as the industry faces increased government scrutiny.

All players of Tencent’s mobile and personal computer games are to verify their identities against police database under the “healthy gaming” system. The Chinese internet behemoth said the new measure will first be applied to 10 of its most popular games before expanding to the entire library.

The move marks Tencent’s latest attempt to assuage government concern for young people’s excessive gaming and meet its call for tighter controls to combat gaming addiction and increasing near-sightedness among underage players.
