The Chinese e-commerce company has a 50:50 partnership with Central Group, Thailand’s largest retail conglomerate. JD sees Singles’ Day as an opportunity to gain footing in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.
Also known as Double 11, the Singles’ Day is originally popularised in China by Alibaba, and is the world’s biggest shopping festival in terms of sales. JD Central is the second joint venture the Beijing-based giant has established in Southeast Asia, having set up one in Indonesia with Provident Capital in 2015.
